Artists of the Valley & Gorman's Art Gallery – Casterton

Group of Artists from Casterton, country Victoria, and further afield in Australia

Impressions of Casterton 9 X 5

After the restrictions and continually being on mental alert and the associated angst during a pandemic, it’s been like coming out of hibernation for a lot of artists. To encourage enthusiasm, Artists of the Valley put forward a challenge to members.

This month at Gorman’s Art Gallery features the results of that members’ challenge – to create works in a small and somewhat unusual size.  The challenge was Inspired by the Heidelberg School artists, who in 1899 exhibited The 9 by 5 Impression Exhibition.  The paintings were all done on cigar box lids, scrounged, begged and bought from tobacconists or friends who smoked cigars – the box lids being 9 inches by five inches in size.

As well as challenging members to convert from metric back to Imperial measurements of the 1890s (and find their old school rulers), Artists of the Valley members were also tasked to make works relevant to Casterton in theme of subject matter.

A diverse range of artwork in varying mediums is the result, with some very fine skill and talent on show in a small but often-detailed artists’ Impressions of Casterton.  Visitors to Gorman’s Art Gallery are urged to vote for their favourite on the slips provided at the door.

The show runs until Mother’s Day weekend, when the People’s Choice Award nominations are counted and the award presented to the overall favourite work.

Gorman’s Art Gallery, at 80 Henty Street, Casterton, is open Thursday through Saturday each week from 11 am till 3 pm.
